Three names cover most aftermarket BMW taillights: GTS style, CSL laser style and LCI style, each borrowed from a lamp BMW fitted to a different car or a later model year. Choose by three things: the look you want, the lens tint your local rules allow, and whether the set plugs into the harness your car actually has. Get the third wrong and the connector does not mate, which is why we ask for a build date and photos before you order.
What "style" means on a taillight listing
The lighting aftermarket names parts the way the aero market does: after the design they follow. A GTS style taillight is shaped and lit to look like the unit BMW fitted to the M4 GTS; it is not made by BMW, and "style" is the word that tells you so. The carbon aero styles post uses the same convention for lips and spoilers.
| Style | Based on | Lens options | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCI style | BMW's own facelift graphics | Clear or red, by chassis | Pre-LCI F30, F80, F32, F82 and G30 owners wanting the later factory look |
| GTS style | M4 GTS bar taillights | Clear, smoked or red | F30 and F80 sedan owners wanting a pattern the standard sedan never had |
| CSL laser style | G82 M4 CSL laser taillights | Clear or dark, see photos | G20, G80, G22 and G82 owners wanting the CSL rear |
| Clear lens | A lens choice, not a car | Clear | G20, G80 and G30 owners wanting the lens change only |
LCI style: the facelift look on a pre-LCI car
LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for the mid-cycle facelift. It changed the taillight graphics on the F30 and F80 M3 sedan for the 2016 model year (mid-2015 production), on the F32 and F82 coupes for 2018, and on the G30 for 2021 (mid-2020 production). Because the connector or the electronics behind the lamp changed too, genuine facelift units are not a straight swap onto an earlier car. Retrofitting them usually means adapter harnesses and coding, and the pre-LCI or LCI post has the build-date checks for each family.
An LCI style set gives you the facelift graphics in a housing built for the earlier car and, where the listing says so, wired for the pre-LCI harness. Confirm that with us before ordering: the line between pre-LCI and LCI is a production date, not a calendar year, and cars built in the changeover months land on both sides of it.
For the F30 and F80 sedan there is a clear-lens LCI style set and a red-lens one that looks factory until lit. The F32 and F82 coupes take the F32/F82 clear LCI set. A sedan set will not mount on a coupe, and a coupe set will not mount on a sedan. G30 sets are under the G30 fitment filter.
GTS style: the M4 GTS bars on a sedan
The M4 GTS shipped with OLED taillights: instead of a diffused red panel, thin bars sit at different depths inside the lens, so the lit lamp looks like a stack of floating lines. Aftermarket GTS style units follow that look, usually with layered LED light guides rather than true OLED panels, whatever the listing calls them. Judge the depth effect from the lit photos, not the name.
We sell GTS style for the F30 and F80 sedan in three lenses: clear, smoked and red. A sedan set is four lamps, two on the quarter panels and two on the trunk lid, with the graphic running across the seam. The whole set changes together, because a factory inner next to an aftermarket outer never lines up.
The standard F30 and F80 never had this pattern from the factory; on those cars it looks like a deliberate choice rather than a later model year. Which harness a GTS style set is built for is stated per listing, not per style, so send your build date and lamp photo before you order and we will confirm which version, if any, matches your car.
CSL laser style, and what V1 and V2 mean
The G82 M4 CSL brought laser taillights: three thin laser-lit threads woven into the cover, parallel in the inner lamp and overlapping in the outer. Lit, the lamp shows sharp lines rather than a filled panel. CSL laser style sets put that graphic on cars that never had it. How dark the lens looks with the car off varies by set, so check the unlit photos on each product page.
For the G20 3 Series and G80 M3 sedan there are two versions, the CSL laser V1 set and the CSL laser V2 set. They are our earlier and later design revisions of the same idea and differ in the light-guide graphics, the lines you see when the lamp is lit. Let the lit photos on both pages decide it, not the version number.
The G22 4 Series and G82 M4 coupe take the G22/G82 laser style set, which shares nothing with the sedan lamps. The G80 sedan's 2025 facelift changed the headlights, not the standard taillights, and the G82 coupe was updated on its own schedule; factory laser taillights appear as an option on some later builds, so the rear will not date the car. On a recent build, send us the build month and a taillight photo rather than assuming from the model year.
Clear, smoked or red: the lens is not the light
The lens colour changes what the lamp looks like switched off, not the colour of the tail and brake functions. That red comes from the light source behind the lens.
- Clear: a white or crystal lens that shows silver against the paint when off and lights red when on, the biggest contrast between lit and unlit of the three.
- Smoked: a dark grey tinted lens that blends into a dark car and stands out on a light one. The tint takes some brightness off, so the lit graphic looks more subdued.
- Red: a factory-like lens that looks stock until lit, the pick for a GTS or LCI pattern without changing the colour of the back of the car.
If you want the clear lens on an otherwise factory graphic, there are clear-lens sets for the G20 and G80 sedan and for the G30.
Sequential signals, start-up animations and the error-free claim
Many of these units include a sequential turn signal, where the indicator sweeps outward instead of flashing as a block, and many include a start-up animation on unlock or ignition. Which set has which is on its product page, not in the style name.
Error-free is the other claim to confirm. The car monitors each lamp circuit, and an LED unit drawing a different current from the factory lamp can put a rear light warning on the dash or hyper-flash the indicator. Units sold as error-free carry electronics that present the load the car expects.
Plug-and-play means the connector mates with your harness with no splicing. It does not promise the car needs no coding, so ask us before you order.
Before you order: a five-minute check
The wrong taillight orders we see come down to three things: a sedan set bought for a coupe, LCI bought for pre-LCI or the reverse, and a harness version that did not match. Five minutes avoids all three.
- Confirm the body style. F30, F80, G20 and G80 are sedans; F32, F82, G22 and G82 are coupes.
- Read the build month and year off the sticker in the driver's door jamb. If it is missing or unreadable, a BMW VIN decoder gives the production month.
- Photograph your taillights from straight behind, off and then lit, in the shade so the graphic shows.
- Open the trunk and photograph the back of one outer lamp, including the connector. On a sedan it sits behind the trunk side trim.
- Send the photos, build month, model and the set you want through the contact page, by email to supportjcxsupplies@gmail.com or by DM to @jcxsupplies. The fitment check is free and happens before you pay.
Once the set is in, check every function with the trunk open before the trim goes back: tail, brake, both indicators, reverse and rear fog where fitted. If a lamp warning shows, message us a photo of it. Headlights need the same discipline; the Snake Eyes headlights post explains why pin count matters as much as model year.
FAQ
Will LCI style taillights plug straight into my pre-LCI F30?
Where the listing says the set is built for the pre-LCI harness, it plugs in with no splicing. The change is a production date, so a car built around the changeover months needs checking first. Send us the build month from the door-jamb sticker and a photo of the back of one lamp.
Are clear or smoked taillights road legal?
It depends where the car is registered, and the two lenses run into different rules: clear units against laws written around a red lens, smoked units against limits on how dark a lens may be. Both keep red tail and brake output, but that alone does not make them legal, so check before you order. Sold for off-road or show use where noted.
What is the difference between CSL laser V1 and V2?
V1 came first and V2 is our later revision of the same CSL laser look for the G20 and G80 sedan. They differ in the light-guide graphics, the lit lines you see with the car running. The number tells you which was drawn first, not which is better. Open both product pages and pick the pattern you prefer.
Do GTS style taillights fit the F32 or F82 coupe?
No. The GTS style sets we list are for the F30 3 Series and F80 M3 sedan, and the coupe's different taillight shapes and trunk lid mean a sedan set will not mount. For the F32 and F82 the clear LCI style set is the coupe option.
