LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for the facelift each chassis gets roughly halfway through its run. The chassis code stays the same, but the headlights, taillights and often the connectors and DRL boards behind them change, which is why "F30 LCI" and "F30 pre-LCI" lighting parts are not interchangeable. The year on your registration gets you close. The build date on the door jamb and a photo of your headlight get you the right part.
F30 3 Series
The F30 sedan ran from the 2012 model year until the G20 replaced it for 2019. Pre-LCI cars are 2012 through 2015; the LCI went into production in mid-2015 as the 2016 model year.
| Pre-LCI | LCI | |
|---|---|---|
| Model years | 2012 to 2015 | 2016 to 2018 |
| Headlights | Halogen or xenon; painted gap to the grille | Halogen or LED; housing reaches the grille |
| Taillights | Original L-shaped graphics | Revised L-shaped LED graphics |
The fastest check is the gap. On a pre-LCI car painted bodywork sits between the headlight and the kidney grille. On an LCI car the housing runs into the grille surround whatever bulb is inside, and on the LED version the lit bar goes with it. Judge the outline, not the bulb: an LCI car can still have halogens, in North America too, because below the 340i LED was an option.
The F30 RGB DRL kit is sold by headlight year because the 2012 to 2015 and the 2016 to 2018 headlights take different boards. It replaces LED boards, so if your pre-LCI car has halogens, whose rings glow a warmer yellow-white, send a photo of the lit ring first and we will confirm whether it applies.
At the back, the F30 and F80 LCI taillights give a pre-LCI sedan the 2016-and-later rear graphics and are listed as a direct replacement for both. Confirm your year and harness with us first; a 2016-or-later F80 already wears these graphics. The taillight styles post decodes GTS, LCI, clear and smoked.
F80 M3 and F82 M4
Owners mix up two changes here. The first is headlight technology: pre-LCI cars, 2015 through 2017, came with xenon headlights as standard or adaptive LED as an option, and the two are different housings with different connectors. The second is the LCI, for the 2018 model year with cars built from 2017, which made adaptive LED standard in a revised housing with a hexagonal DRL outline instead of rounded rings.
The taillights ran on their own schedule: the F80 M3 sedan got the L-shaped LED units for the 2016 model year, from July 2015 production, and the F82 M4 only at the 2018 LCI. An M3's taillights therefore say nothing about its headlights.
| Model year | Headlights | Taillights |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 (built 2014 to mid-2015) | Xenon or optional adaptive LED; rounded rings | Original, M3 and M4 |
| 2016 to 2017 | Xenon or optional adaptive LED; rounded rings | M3: LCI graphics. M4: original |
| 2018 on | Adaptive LED standard; hexagonal outline | LCI graphics, M3 and M4 |
The DRL kits follow the 2018 headlight boundary. The F80 RGB DRL pre-LCI kit is listed for pre-LCI cars, 2015 to 2017, and the F80 RGB DRL LCI 18+ kit for 2018 and later. Both fit the F82 M4 and the F32 4 Series, which took the same 2018 LCI in North America (spring 2017 elsewhere), so place a 4 Series by its DRL, not its registration year.
G20 3 Series
The G20 pre-LCI runs from the 2019 to the 2022 model year; the LCI is the 2023 model year, built from mid-2022. It is the easiest of the five families to identify because the headlight itself changed shape.
| Pre-LCI | LCI | |
|---|---|---|
| Model years | 2019 to 2022 | 2023 on |
| Headlights | Taller housing, notch in its lower edge, ring-type DRL | Slimmer housing, two thin inverted-L strokes, no ring |
A ring-type DRL in a housing with a small upward notch in its lower edge means the G20 RGB DRL pre-LCI kit. Two thin inverted-L strokes, a straight lower edge and no ring mean the G20 RGB DRL LCI kit. On pre-LCI cars the ring is U-shaped with standard LED headlights and hexagonal with Laserlight, a different lamp inside, so tell us which you have or send the photo. To replace tired modules and stay factory white, use the G20 DRL modules, sold in pre-LCI and LCI versions, single colour or RGB.
G80 M3 and G82 M4
The G80 M3 sedan launched for the 2021 model year and took its LCI for 2025, with new headlights and a new DRL signature. The standard taillights carried over, and factory laser taillights appear as an option on some later builds, so the rear will not date one of these cars. The G82 M4 coupe and G83 convertible were updated on their own schedule, so check the build date and photograph the headlight rather than borrowing the sedan's dates.
| Pre-LCI | LCI | |
|---|---|---|
| G80 M3 sedan | 2021 to 2024 | 2025 on |
| G82 M4, G83 convertible | From 2021 | Own schedule; confirm by build date and photo |
| Headlight DRL | Ring-type, in the same housing as the pre-LCI G22 4 Series | Two slim inverted-L strokes, no ring |
A ring-type DRL, U-shaped or hexagonal, means pre-LCI whatever the sale listing said; two slim inverted-L strokes mean LCI. Laserlight lamps, with blue inlays along the top edge, differ inside from the standard unit, so say which you have. Then filter the catalog by G80 and still send the headlight photo; the coupe's separate LCI date is exactly what a year on a form gets wrong.
G30 5 Series
The G30 pre-LCI is the 2017 to 2020 model year. The LCI is the 2021 model year, built from mid-2020, and it changed both ends of the car: slimmer headlights, a larger kidney grille and new taillights with three-dimensional L-shaped graphics.
| Pre-LCI | LCI | |
|---|---|---|
| Model years | 2017 to 2020 | 2021 on |
| Headlights | Taller unit; two hexagonal or round DRL rings | Slimmer unit; two U-shaped rings on standard LED, two L-shapes on matrix LED or Laserlight |
| Taillights | Original graphics | Revised LCI graphics |
The G30 LCI taillights put the facelift rear graphics on a pre-LCI car; as with the F30, confirm your year and harness with us first. At the front, height is the tell: the LCI unit is visibly shorter and meets a wider, taller grille. Do not rely on the DRL shape here: an L-shaped DRL is LCI, but a base LCI car still runs two U-shaped rings in the slimmer housing.
Four checks that settle it
Do these in order. Most cars are settled by the first two.
Read the build date. The driver's door-jamb sticker shows the month and year of production. BMW model years generally change over in the summer, so a second-half build usually carries the next model year. Within a few months of a boundary above, treat the model year as unknown and keep going.
Photograph the lit headlight. Ignition on in daylight, light switch in Auto and daytime running lights enabled in iDrive, then photograph the whole headlight square-on. The DRL shape is the best single tell but chassis-specific, so read it against your car's table: rounded rings against a hexagonal outline on the F80 and F82, a ring against two slim strokes on the G20 and G80, housing height on the G30, and on the F30 whether the housing reaches the grille.
Count the pins. Open the hood, find the main connector on the back of the headlight, unplug it, count the populated positions and photograph the connector face. This decides full replacement housings and catches retrofitted headlights. The Snake Eyes post has the full procedure.
Compare the taillights. Hold the LCI-style taillight product photos against your car. If the lit graphic already matches, you have the LCI rear; if not, the LCI-style units are the retrofit. The F80 M3's rear changed two years before its front, so this dates the taillights, not the headlights.
Why we ask for a headlight photo
A year on an order form fails in three places. At a boundary, June and August builds of the same calendar year can be different model years. Where an option changed the connector, a 2015 F80 with xenons and one with LEDs share a year but not a housing. And a previous owner may have swapped the headlights.
A photo of the lit headlight and one of the connector behind it get past all three: we match the kit to the light in front of us, not the registration. Send them through the contact page, by email to supportjcxsupplies@gmail.com or by Instagram to @jcxsupplies, with your year, model and order number. The check is free.
FAQ
Is a 2015 F30 or F80 pre-LCI or LCI?
A 2015 F30 is pre-LCI. A 2015 F80 or F82 is pre-LCI at both ends, but its headlight may be xenon or LED depending on how it was ordered, and the two use different housings. A 2016 or 2017 M3 sedan already wears the LCI taillights but still takes the pre-LCI DRL kit. Photograph the headlight and connector before ordering anything that goes inside it.
Can I put LCI taillights on a pre-LCI car?
Yes. LCI-style taillights give a pre-LCI F30, F80 or G30 the facelift rear graphics and are listed as direct replacements for the factory units. Harness details vary by year, so confirm yours with us before ordering.
Will a pre-LCI DRL kit fit an LCI car if the plug looks the same?
Do not rely on the plug. RGB DRL boards are shaped for one generation of headlight, and a plug that mates does not mean the boards sit where the factory LEDs sat. Order by headlight generation; if the DRL shape does not clearly match either column, send us the photo.
