Best BMW F30 carbon fiber mods: lips, diffusers, canards, mirrors

The best F30 carbon fiber mods compared: four front lips, two rear diffusers, canards and mirror caps, how to check your bumper, and builds at three budgets.

The carbon parts that change an F30 the most are a front lip and a rear diffuser, in that order, with mirror caps as the cheapest way to put carbon at eye level. All four of our F30 and F31 front lips fit the M Sport front bumper only, so the first job is checking which bumper your car wears. After that it comes down to how loud you want the car to look, and keeping the front and rear in the same family.

M Sport or base bumper: check this before anything else

BMW sold the F30 and F31 with a base bumper, Sport Line and Luxury Line versions, and the M Sport bumper. The lower edge of the M Sport bumper is a different shape from the others, and every lip in this post is moulded to it.

The quickest check is the front of the car:

  1. M Sport bumper. Three large openings across the lower bumper: a wide centre intake and two big angular intakes at the corners, filled with black mesh. Where fog lights are fitted, they sit inside those outer intakes.
  2. Base, Sport Line and Luxury Line bumper. Smaller openings with more painted bumper between them, and the fog lights in their own surrounds at the corners.

Badges are a weaker clue. M Sport cars carry an M badge on each front wing, but badges are easy to add, and plenty of F30s have had an M Sport bumper fitted since. A VIN decoder that lists option codes shows the factory M Sport package as option 337, but what matters for a lip is the bumper on the car today.

The LCI (Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's mid-cycle facelift) arrived for the 2016 model year and mostly changed the lights. If you are not sure which side of it your car falls, the pre-LCI vs LCI post walks through the build-date sticker and headlight shapes.

The four F30 front lips compared

All four are dry carbon and fit the F30 sedan and F31 Touring with the M Sport front bumper. The difference is profile, and especially what happens at the corners.

StyleProfileCornersSuitsPrice
Varis styleSlim, one piece, follows the bumper edge corner to cornerClean, no added finsA low, factory-looking front$475
M-Tech styleOne piece, smooth rounded profileRounded, follows the bumperThe quietest look; daily cars$435
M Sport styleRuns along the bottom of the bumper, M Performance shapeRaised splitter sections at each cornerOwners who want the dealer-accessory look$425
MAD styleAggressive one piece with a raised centre sectionSharp winglets at each endLowered cars and track-day looks$500

The Varis style front lip is the one to pick if you want the car to look lower without anyone working out why. It is a slim blade that traces the bottom of the bumper from corner to corner, so it reads as part of the bumper rather than something bolted under it.

The M-Tech style front lip is the softest of the four. Its rounded profile follows the bumper edge with no sharp lines, which suits a Touring or a car on factory ride height where you want carbon without changing the character of the front.

The M Sport style front lip follows the shape of BMW's M Performance lip, with raised splitter sections at each corner. It pairs most naturally with MP style rear parts, and it is the least expensive of the four.

The MAD style front lip is the loudest. The centre section is raised and the ends carry sharp winglets that kick up at the corners and changes the face of the car from any angle. It looks best on a lowered car with a diffuser at the back to balance it.

If the style names on these listings are new to you, the carbon aero styles post explains what MP, V and the rest refer to.

F30 rear diffusers: third brake light or M Sport style

Both diffusers are dry carbon, fit the F30 sedan and F31 Touring, and replace the factory lower rear insert rather than sitting over it.

The M Sport style rear diffuser ($399) swaps the factory insert for a finned carbon piece in the M Sport look. It is the natural partner for the M Sport style or M-Tech style lip.

The rear diffuser with third brake light ($425) has a light built into the centre, with tall fins standing either side of it. It is the more motorsport-looking option and the one to pair with the MAD lip.

Both have exhaust tip cut-outs at both ends, and that is the detail to check. A car whose exhaust exits on one side only, or an aftermarket exhaust with different tips, may not line up with the openings. Send us a photo of the back of the car with your bumper and exhaust setup and we will confirm which diffuser fits, and ask about the third brake light wiring at the same time.

Canards: V style front and MP style rear

Canards are small add-on pieces at the bumper corners that finish off whatever lip or diffuser you already have.

The V style canards ($280) bolt on at the bumper corners and add a sharp, angled edge that follows the bumper lines. Note that they are listed as carbon fiber rather than dry carbon, so they are not made the same way as the dry carbon lips; the dry vs wet carbon post covers how the two differ and how to care for each. They suit the MAD or Varis lip best, where the front already has a sharp edge to continue.

The MP style rear canards ($260) follow the M Performance design: each side is a flat splitter blade with a vertical fin at the end, mounted to the corners of the factory rear bumper. They make the back of the car look wider and lower.

Neither listing names a bumper, so include a photo of the relevant bumper corner when you ask us to check fitment.

Carbon mirror caps for the F30, F31 and F32

Mirror caps are the carbon part you see every time you get in. Both versions are dry carbon, replace the factory painted caps, are sold as a left and right pair, and fit the F30 sedan, F31 Touring and F32 coupe.

Mirror capShapeLookPrice
OEM shapeKeeps the factory mirror shapeLooks like a factory carbon option$195
M styleSharper, swept-back shape of the M3 and M4 mirrorsChanges the silhouette of the mirror$185

The OEM shape mirror caps are for owners who want the car to look as though it left the factory with carbon. The M style mirror caps give the mirror the more pointed M car profile, which reads well with the M Sport and MAD style lips. Because they replace the caps instead of sticking over them, there is no join line either way.

Suggested F30 carbon builds by budget

These combinations stay within one look front to rear and use current catalogue prices. All of them assume an F30 or F31 with the M Sport front bumper.

BuildPartsTotal
Subtle starterM Sport style front lip, OEM shape mirror caps$620
Clean TouringM-Tech style front lip, M Sport style rear diffuser, OEM shape mirror caps$1,029
M Performance lookM Sport style front lip, M Sport style rear diffuser, MP style rear canards$1,084
Full aggressiveMAD style front lip, V style canards, rear diffuser with third brake light, MP style rear canards, M style mirror caps$1,650

The subtle starter suits a car on factory suspension. The clean Touring keeps every profile rounded and low. The M Performance look is the most coherent set, with every part from the same family. The full aggressive build is for a lowered car; the MAD lip and canards at the front need the finned diffuser and rear canards at the back, or the car looks nose-heavy.

To mix your own, pick one loud end and keep the other a step quieter. A MAD lip with an M Sport style diffuser works; a MAD lip with nothing at the back does not.

Next step: F30 lighting

Lights are usually the next change, and on the F30 the facelift year decides which parts fit.

The F30 LCI switchable headlights ($750) are sold for both pre-LCI and LCI cars, with options for halogen and xenon cars and yellow/white or yellow/white/amber DRL colours. For a pre-LCI car, the G80 style headlights for the F30 ($800) give the front the look of the G80 M3's headlights, again with a 2 way or 3 way switchable DRL. At the back, the F30/F80 clear GTS taillights ($499) replace the factory sedan units. The F31 and F32 use different taillights. There is also an F30 RGB DRL kit sold by headlight year if you want to change the DRL colour inside your existing headlights.

The full range for the car is under all F30 parts, and the Aero & Carbon department has every carbon part we list.

Before ordering, use the free fitment check: message us through the contact page with your car's year, model and a photo of the front or rear bumper, plus your exhaust setup if you are ordering a diffuser, and we will confirm the part fits.

FAQ

Will an F30 front lip fit a non-M Sport bumper?

No. All four of our F30 and F31 lips are made for the M Sport front bumper only. The base, Sport Line and Luxury Line bumpers have a different lower edge, so the lip will not sit correctly.

How do I know if my F30 has the M Sport bumper?

Look at the lower bumper. The M Sport bumper has a wide centre intake and two large angular corner intakes with black mesh, with the fog lights, where fitted, inside those corner intakes. Base and trim-line bumpers have smaller openings and fog lights in separate surrounds. If you are unsure, send us a photo.

Do F30 lips and diffusers fit the F31 Touring?

Yes. The front lips, both rear diffusers and both sets of canards are listed for the F30 sedan and the F31 Touring. Diffuser fitment still depends on your rear bumper and exhaust, so send us a photo before ordering.

Do F30 carbon mirror caps fit the F32 4 Series?

Yes. Both the OEM shape and M style mirror caps fit the F30, F31 and F32, and both replace the factory caps rather than covering them.

Which F30 rear diffuser works with an aftermarket exhaust?

It depends on where your tips exit and their size. Both diffusers have cut-outs at each end, so send us a photo of the back of the car with your exhaust details and we will confirm which one lines up.
